FAQ

Q. Will I still need to change the filters in my heating and air conditioning system?

A.  Yes, the Plasma Air equipment is not a filter.  It does not trap particles but rather reduces airborne pollutants in the occupied space – where you live, eat, sleep, etc.  In fact, because your Plasma Air system causes airborne particles to stick together, your filters will become more efficient by trapping these larger particles.

Q.How often should the ionization tubes be changed?

A. The tubes will degrade and become ineffective after approximately 1 year. The tubes need to be changed once a year, every year.

Q. I want to order my replacement tube, but I cannot make contact with the contractor who initially installed my unit. What should I do now?

A. Please send an email to info@plasma-air.com or call us at 203-662-0800.  We will provide the name of a local contractor that can properly service your unit.

Q. What do we do with the used ionization tubes?

A.  The tubes can be recycled.  When you receive your replacement tube, there will be instructions on how and where to return the used tube.

Q. Should the ionization tubes be cleaned periodically?

A. Clean tubes produce more ions than dirty tubes. In a typical residential or commercial project the tubes do not need to be cleaned. However, in a heavily polluted commercial project like an animal hospital or garbage room or in an industrial project like a manufacturing facility or waste water treatment plant, the tubes should be inspected and cleaned if necessary every 3 – 6 months.

Q. Does Plasma Air have a device that measures ion levels?

A. Yes, we have a specially designed ion meter that will read ion levels. More information is provided in the products section of this site.

Q. What is the maximum temperature that the ionization tube can be subjected to?

A.  The tubes should not be subjected to temperatures exceeding 140º F.  The supply air discharge of most gas and oil-fired furnaces can exceed 140º F, while hot water coils or electrical reheat coils typically don’t exceed 110º F.

Q. Does humidity affect ionization output?

A.  Yes, moisture laden air will yield a lower ionization output than dry air.  You will measure between 20% and 30% less ions at higher humidity levels.

Q. Does the ionization system increase the oxygen content in air?

A.  No. The technology increases the number of oxygen ions, not the number of oxygen molecules.  It revitalizes stable oxygen molecules into unstable oxygen ions – these ions want to react with pollutants by trading electrons to become stable again.

Q. Does Plasma Air have any information that will help determine the tube size for my home?

A.  Yes, we have put together a Residential Product Selection Guide that will aid in determining the tube size for you home.

Q. How do I know that my Plasma Air equipment is working properly?

A.  First ensure that the green light on the front of your ionization unit is illuminated.  If the green light is not on, call the dealer that installed your unit and have them service it. If the green light is on but you do not feel that the air is being cleaned sufficiently, you can turn the ionization level knob up until you are satisfied with the air quality. If your ionization tube has not been replaced within the last 12 months, you should contact your Distributor or Dealer and have them replace the tube.

Q. Does the Plasma Air technology kill mold?

A. It is able to reduce airborne mold spores by charging them, causing them to stick together and fall out of the breathing zone.  An independent laboratory test was performed illustrating this. It will also inhibit actively growing mold by penetrating the cell’s split zone causing oxidation.

Q. I have a UV light in my system.  Isn’t that all I need to effectively clean my air?

A. No, UV lights are only effectively on a handful of contaminants and these contaminants have to pass directly through the light field.  Additionally, these contaminants have to pass through the light field for a long enough period to be effective.  Lastly, UV lights don’t treat any of the air in the occupied space.  It requires that air to be returned by the air conditioning system. However, if you have one, we would recommend keeping it in place.  If nothing else, it may help to keep the cooling coil in your air conditioning system cleaner.

Q. Is it dangerous to look at the ionization tube while it is operating?

A.  No.  Unlike UV lamps, which can harm your eyes, there is no danger in looking at a powered ionization tube.

Q. Can a Plasma Air system harm my pets?

A.  Not at all.  They, like yourself, will benefit from living in a cleaner environment.  And your Plasma Air system will be very effective in eliminating their odors.

Q. Is touching the ionization tube dangerous?

A. Yes, if the ionization unit is powered and you touch the tube, you could be injured.  Therefore, before touching the tube or removing it for annual replacement, make sure the power to the unit is off by unplugging it from the power source.
